This work is a continuous exploration following the idea of creating depth and space with the use of light, forms and transparencies. I have great curiosity about the potential of transforming a white canvas into a new visual world of three-dimensional composition in which the gaze and imagination of the spectator are the only tools for interpretation.

My artwork aims to create an exploration of my memories and emotions using an underlying abstract structure in which the organization of space- much as an Architect in the use of line, plane and volume- dissolves the viewer into the space presented. This project started with the idea of creating a triptych of abstract character where each 30” x 36” canvas covers a particular space of my client’s home. After a visit to her home to get to know her environment and family, the work titled: “Tribute to the family” was born. The result of this composition is a wonderful narrative where shapes, lines and colors speak of her life, feelings, children, memories and places. The various layers that create depth and mystery, outline the complexity of life and love. I an intensely grateful for this opportunity to tell a beautiful story through my art.

I consider this artwork the beginning of several pieces based on the on the concept of movement, layers and colors. Memories of the ocean’s movement and the corrosion of the water on stone, coral or sand come to mind. The idea of naming it “Composition” is that of letting the viewer dissolve into the space presented becoming an involved participant of the abstract world at sight and finding a personal meaning of its own.

This commission emerged from the series: “The Girls” that I’ve been developing for several months now. In this series I am using a specific theme, in this case, the female figure and her sensory experience, to be represented both on canvas and clay. In this project, the biggest challenge was to develop a chromatic composition where the dominating color was green based on my client’s requirements. Following my style and ideas I wanted to reflect the attributes of a woman with green eyes that reflected a sweet and intelligent stare. Using the Yagrumo leaf as a reference point, symbol of her love for her homeland and nature. Her green eyes emanate mystery, strength and feminine sensuality. I’m grateful for the support and admiration that this green-eyed woman has always given me- “ Green, I love you green”-

It is interesting to see how memory works on the human psychology. How all the senses are involved and the most mundane things trigger memories of the past. For me, the food and the smell of bananas brings memories of the tropical sun, beach and family gatherings. This sweet and colorful fruit makes me smile.

I started this painting thinking of creating a series about the typical symbols that have been used to represent Caribbean lifestyles throughout art history. As the work progressed, I realized that my real feelings towards the object chosen were beyond the common use and the work took a significant turn towards my subconscious connections of past and present experiences. The main object dominates the composition giving it balance and symmetry. However, it is joined in harmony by the layers and “bands” that unify, such as a flag that unites and represents a nation. Each “band “ has a different content but needed to represent its uniqueness as a whole. It is as if not just one or the other, but all together needed to be ONE. I look at my work and these words come to mind:

I love the weather,colors and flavors of the Caribbean! It’s part of who I am and my family background. Ever since I have memory of the effects of color and emotions, I think of the tropical sun and the bright colors all around. Living in Mexico, made me realize how much I missed the colors and the light of my tropical island. Is as if the effects of the sun and the light of the tropics are imbedded in my blood. Hope you can feel the heat and the essence of the tropical flora in this art piece.
